What's in a Puppy's Name?

Indeed, what is in a puppies name? I suppose you could call a puppy almost anything, and some people do, and the little guy will still learn to to come running as fast as he can, when he hears the joyous sound of his person uttering his name. For it is his name, something of pride, something he eagerly and earnestly responds to.

So, just like you don't like it when someone makes fun of you or laughs and points you out in front of others because of your name or some other identifying feature, neither will your dog like it when people laugh at the name you have given him and he has learned to love.

There are some practical things to consider as well. The ideal name, if there is such a thing, should be short and of one or two sylables . . . . e.g. Rex or Fido. It should sound unique and not similar to any commands you might give your dog. You must be consistent when using the name and not keep changing it for this will only serve to confuse the dog. Invariably, if you hand a dog a clumsy, long name you'll end up using a short version eventually. So, why not choose a catchy, short name that your best friend and you can both be proud of.
